The Spartans started the 2003-2004 season out with a bang
as they shut out the University at Buffalo Freeze 9-0 Friday night.
Sophomore Ashley Wright started off the scoring with a goal at 13:02 of
the first period, assisted by newcomers Adrienne Shaw and Megan Higgins.
Defenseman Kristen Wilbur widened the gap to 2 when she put one past the
UB goaltender 3 minutes later. Andrea Didrichsons had the assist.
In the second period, freshman Catherine Shaw scored 2 goals.
Assists went to Tatum MacLeod, Andrea Dillon (2), and Amanda Gallery.
In the third period, MSU took a penalty and managed to score 3
shorthanded goals during the 2 minute penalty. Gallery took
a pass from junior Jessi Kidder and scored her first goal of the season
on a breakaway. Sarah Steele followed with a goal a minute later,
assisted by Andrea Dillon. Steele then passed the puck to Andrea
DeShong, who finished off the set with a breakaway goal. Jessi
Kidder took the puck down the right side and scored on a wrist shot at
11:19 of the third, assisted by linemates Sarah Bienkowski and Karri
Hobbs. Hobbs would round out the scoring at 9 with a top corner goal of
her own, assisted by Bienkowski. Coach Craig Payment was happy
with the improvement he saw from his team in the 3rd period. Lynne
Walter played in net for the Spartans, but saw no shots as Michigan
State outshot Buffalo 43-0. Mary Martin was applauded for her
solid defensive play. This game makes MSU 0-0-0 in the CCWHA,
1-0-0 in the ACHA, and 1-0-0 overall.
10/12 @ University at Buffalo: MSU -
16 UB - 0
Michigan State came out flying for night 2 against the
University at Buffalo. The Spartans scored 8 goals in the first
period alone. Freshman Megan Higgins recorded her first collegiate
goal at 11:38 of the 1st, assisted by Amanda Gallery. Tatum
MacLeod did the same thing a minute later, assisted by Mindy MCarthy.
Ashley Wright banged one in at 8:46, with assists going to MacLeod and
freshman defenseman Katie McPharlin. Twenty seconds later,
freshman Adrienne Shaw scored her first goal as a Spartan, assisted by
Higgins and Andrea DeShong. MSU continued to dominate the period,
with goals by Gallery, Andrea Dillon, Sarah Steele, and Higgins.
Assists went to Kristen Wilbur, DeShong, and Gallery. Michigan
State focused on their passes and quality shots in the second period,
and ended up with four more goals by Mary Martin, Catherine Shaw, Sarah
Bienkowski, and Sarah Steele. Bienkowski, Jessi Kidder, Gallery,
Martin, McPharlin, and DeShong all recorded assists. The third
period proved to be much of the same, as MacLeod, Gallery, C. Shaw, and
Martin added another goal to their stats while Steele, DeShong, Martin,
Gallery, and McPharlin had assists. Gallery, McPharlin, and
DeShong all had playmakers in the game. Sophomore Jen Fine suited
up in net, and stopped all 6 of UB's shots to earn her first shutout of
the year. The Spartans outshot the Freeze 51-6 in the game.
Every MSU player (excluding the goalies!) recorded at least one point
this weekend, and 14 different players scored goals. Coach Payment
was pleased with the team play and nonstop effort that the girls gave in
this second game. This win makes MSU 0-0-0 in the CCWHA, 2-0-0 in
the ACHA, and 2-0-0 overall.
10/17 Vs. Northern
Michigan: MSU - 4 NMU - 1
The Spartans opened up CCWHA play with a win over
the Northern Michigan Wildcats Friday night. Senior Sarah Steele
scored on a breakaway just two minutes into the game to get things
rolling for MSU. At 4:22 of the second, Catherine Shaw slid a pass
over to Megan Higgins, who one-timed the puck to score her 3rd goal of
the season. On a Spartan power play in the third period, captain
Mindy McCarthy passed the puck up to Steele. Steele slid the pass
back and McCarthy slid it 5-hole past NMU's Tara Trombly to put Michigan
State up by 3. Catherine Shaw rounded out the scoring with a goal
a minute later, assisted by Higgins and Amanda Gallery. The
Wildcats managed to slide one past MSU's Jen Fine with 3 minutes
remaining in the game to make it 4-1. MSU outshot Northern 41-8
and it was a physical game with many penalties taken by both teams.
This game makes Michigan State 1-0-0 in the CCWHA, 3-0-0 in the ACHA,
and 3-0-0 overall.
10/18 Vs. Northern
Michigan: MSU - 4
NMU - 1
Michigan State finished off a weekend sweep over Northern
Michigan with a 4-1 win on Saturday night. Wildcat freshman Sami
Luttmann fired a wrist shot through traffic past Jen Fine to put NMU up
by one in the first minute of play. At 11:30 of the first period,
defenseman Andrea Dillon took a shot from the point, Mindy
McCarthy rebounded, and Tatum MacLeod finished off the play to tie the
game. The second period was all Michigan State as Mary Martin and
Megan Higgins each had goals. Assists went to Kristen Wilbur and
Catherine Shaw. The third period went scoreless until 0:55, when
Higgins scored her second of the night, assisted by Wilbur and C. Shaw.
Jen Fine played a strong game in net, and MSU outshot Northern 54-18.
This win makes Michigan State 2-0-0 in the CCWHA, 4-0-0 in the ACHA, and
4-0-0 overall.
10/24 @ Sacred Heart
University: MSU - 1
SHU - 5
The Spartans headed out to Fairfield, Connecticut to get
a taste of Division I varsity hockey. Michigan State made a few mistakes that led to a 5-1 victory by the Sacred Heart Pioneers.
Penalties were an issue for MSU, as 2 of Sacred Heart's goals came on
5-on-3 power plays, and another came on a 5-on-4. MSU calmed down
in the 2nd and 3rd periods, outshooting Sacred Heart 17-16. Sarah Steele
scored the lone Spartan goal on a breakaway in the third period. Jen
Fine played well in net for MSU, making 24 saves in the 60 minute game.
This loss makes the Spartans 2-0-0 in the CCWHA, 4-0-0 in the ACHA, and
4-1-0 overall.
10/25 @ Sacred Heart
University: MSU - 0
SHU - 2
Michigan State came out strong on night 2 against Sacred
Heart University. The first period was scoreless, as MSU outshot
SHU 8-7. Neither team could manage a goal in the 2nd period, and
the game remained scoreless until the Pioneers tipped in a goal
with 6 minutes remaining in the third period to take the lead.
They buried a rebound over a minute later to make the final score 2-0.
Michigan State played a tight third period with Sacred Heart, as shots
were even at 12 per team. Lynne Walter had an outstanding game in
net for the Spartans, making 32 saves.
The girls were disappointed with their loss in this close game, but really enjoyed the
competition they faced this weekend. This game makes Michigan
State 2-0-0 in the CCWHA, 4-0-0 in the ACHA, and 4-2-0 overall.
11/7 Vs. Oakland
University: MSU - 4
OU - 1
The Spartans faced CCWHA opponent Oakland University in
the first of a home and home series Friday night. Amanda Gallery
started off the scoring at 15:02 of the first period, with her 3rd goal
of the year. Linemates Mindy McCarthy and Ashley Wright had the
assists. Andrea DeShong picked up her 2nd goal of the season off
of a pass from Andrea Didrichsons 2 minutes later. The Polar Bears
scored their lone goal with 2 minutes remaining in the 2nd period.
In the third, Gallery took a pass from Wright and scored her second of
the night, giving her a team-leading 11 points. With 5:41
remaining in the third, goaltender Jen Fine chipped the puck up to
Catherine Shaw, whose give-and-go play with Sarah Bienkowski resulted in
her breakaway goal. Shaw is now tied for 1st in goals on the team
with 6. MSU outshot Oakland 32-15. This win makes
Michigan State 3-0-0 in the CCWHA, 4-0-0 in the ACHA, and 5-2-0 overall.
11/8 @ Oakland
University: MSU - 4
OU - 1
Michigan State traveled to Rochester Saturday night to
face Oakland University for the second of their two game series.
Spartan freshman Catherine Shaw started off the scoring for MSU with a
goal at 14:54 of the first period. Andrea DeShong recorded the assist.
Later in the period, Amanda Gallery notched her 5th goal of the season
on a rebound from defenseman Adrienne Shaw's shot. In the second
period, Mindy McCarthy backhanded a rebound from Gallery over OU's
goalie to put Michigan State up by 3. In the third, Catherine Shaw
hit the mark again for a team-leading 8 goals this season. DeShong
again had the assist. The Polar Bears' Sarah Costigan scored on a
breakaway midway through the third to make the final 4-1. It was a
very physical game, with 40 penalty minutes called. Lynne Walter
played in goal for the Spartans, and MSU dominated the game, outshooting
Oakland 60-6. Jane Lemaux played a strong game in net for OU.
This win makes Michigan State 4-0-0 in the CCWHA, 4-0-0 in the ACHA, and
6-2-0 overall.

@ Western Michigan University: MSU - 2 WMU

The Spartans took on CCWHA opponent Western Michigan
Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena. MSU took the lead early in the
second period when Ashley Wright shot the puck over Rhonda Sheahan's
shoulder. Amanda Gallery and Catherine Shaw had the assists.
Later in the second, Tatum MacLeod took a pass from Kristen Wilbur and
her shot was rebounded by freshman Sarah Bienkowski for her 2nd goal of
the season. A bad line change at the beginning of the third led to
a goal by Western's Katy Wasburn, who was left open in front of the net.
With :15 remaining in the game, The Mustangs pulled their goalie and
scored from the point to tie the game. Michigan State outshot
Western 37-13 and played a fairly solid game. Jen Fine played in
net for the Spartans. This tie makes MSU 4-0-1 in the CCWHA, 4-0-1
in the ACHA, and 6-2-1 overall.
11/15 @ Western Michigan
University: MSU - 3 WMU - 1
Michigan State met up with the Lady Mustangs on Saturday
night for game two of their weekend series. Western got on the
board late in the first period. In the second, Mindy McCarthy took
a pass from linemate Ashley Wright on a 2-on-1 and scored on a wrist
shot from the left circle. Later in the period, McCarthy scored
again to give the Spartans the lead. Wright and Amanda Gallery had
the assists. Western pulled their goalie late in the game, but
senior Andrea DeShong found the empty net to make the final 3-1.
Jen Fine made 18 saves in goal for MSU as Michigan State outshot the
Mustangs 25-19. The Spartans are now 5-0-1 in the CCWHA, 5-0-1 in
the ACHA, and 7-2-1 overall.
11/21 vs. University of
Notre Dame: MSU - 12 ND - 1
The Spartans took on the University of Notre Dame Friday
night at Munn Ice Arena. Catherine Shaw got things started early
in the first period, assisted by linemates Tatum MacLeod and Megan
Higgins. Higgins banged in a rebound 6 minutes later, assisted by
MacLeod and C. Shaw. At 8:30 of the first period, Jessi Kidder
passed the puck over the Mary Martin, who shot one past Fighting Irish
goalie Angelina Zehrbach. 30 seconds later, senior Andrea DeShong
scored on a breakaway, assisted by Sarah Steele and Andrea Didrichsons.
MacLeod rounded out the first period scoring on a shorthanded breakaway
goal of her own, assisted by defenseman Adrienne Shaw. In the
second period, Catherine Shaw scored her team-leading 10th goal of the
season, assisted by MacLeod and Kristen Wilbur. The only other
goal of the period came from Mary Martin, with assists going to Karri
Hobbs and Kidder. The 3rd period was dominated by MSU as well, as
DeShong started off the scoring on the power play as she top-shelved a
rebound from Catherine Shaw's shot. MacLeod put in her second of the night 15
seconds later, assisted by C. Shaw. At 11:33 of the third, Martin
took a pass from Kidder and Andrea Dillon to score her 3rd goal of the
night. Notre Dame's Megan Mattia scored the loan Fighting Irish
goal midway through the third period after a scramble in front of the
net. At 4:26 of the third, DeShong scored her third goal of
the night, assisted by Didrichsons and Katie McPharlin. McPharlin
rounded out the scoring with her first goal of the year on a slapshot
from the point. Catherine Shaw and Higgins had assists. In
the game, Mary Martin and Andrea DeShong recorded hat tricks, while
Tatum MacLeod, Catherine Shaw, and Jessi Kidder had playmakers.
Lynne Walter played in net, and MSU outshot ND 33-5. This win
makes Michigan State 6-0-1 in the CCWHA, 6-0-1 in the ACHA, and 8-2-1
overall.
11/22 vs. University of Notre Dame: MSU -

Michigan State finished out their weekend sweep with a
10-0 shutout over the Fighting Irish Saturday night. Sophomore

by Amanda Gallery and Katie McPharlin. Less than a minute later,
Catherine Shaw put in her 11th goal of the season. Tatum MacLeod
and Megan Higgins had the assists. The Spartans dominated the 2nd
period with 4 goals in the first 3 minutes, and one late in the period.
Wright had 2 goals to give her a hat trick while Jessi Kidder, MacLeod,
and Andrea DeShong also scored. Assists went to Karri Hobbs, Mary
Martin, Sarah Bienkowski, Sarah Steele, Andrea Didrichsons, and Gallery.
In the third, C. Shaw scored her team-leading 12th goal, assisted by
MacLeod. Bienkowski put one past Notre Dame's goalie, assisted by
Mindy McCarthy. Martin rounded out the scoring with 2:18 remaining
in the game. McPharlin and Kidder had the assists. MSU
played a solid game all around and outshot Notre Dame 46-3. Lynne
Walter played in net, earning her 2nd shutout of the season. This
win makes the Spartans 7-0-1 in the CCWHA, 7-0-1 in the ACHA, and 9-2-1
overall.

Michigan: MSU - 5 UM - 2
The Spartans traveled to Ann Arbor Saturday night for a
weekend series against CCWHA rival, the University of Michigan.
Five minutes into the first period, defenseman Adrienne Shaw slid a pass
over to her partner Kristen Wilbur, whose slap-shot went high over the
Wolverine goalie to put MSU up by one. Catherine Shaw had the
other assist. Michigan evened up the score later in the first
period and then went ahead 2-1 with a power play goal at 3:40 of the
second. State's Andrea Didrichsons responded with her first goal
of the year a minute later, assisted by linemate Andrea DeShong.
The third period was all MSU, as Andrea DeShong rebounded her own shot
and top-shelved her 8th goal of the season, assisted by Wilbur and Sarah
Steele. Later in the third, sophomore Mary Martin broke in alone
on the UM net and scored top corner to put the Spartans up by 2.
Amanda Gallery rounded out the scoring with a wrap around goal, assisted
by linemates Mindy McCarthy and Ashley Wright. Jen Fine played in
net for Michigan State, and the Spartans outshot the Wolverines 34-7.
This win makes MSU 8-0-1 in the CCWHA, 8-0-1 in the ACHA, and 10-2-1
overall.
12/7 @ University of
Michigan: MSU - 6 UM - 0
Michigan State finished their two game set against the
University of Michigan with a 6-0 shutout in Ann Arbor. Amanda
Gallery took a pass from Ashley Wright after the opening faceoff and
scored just 14 seconds into the first period. This score held
until early in the second period when Wright scored a goal of her own,
assisted by Catherine Shaw and Gallery. Minutes later, Andrea
DeShong dug the puck out to Sarah Steele, who centered a pass to Andrea
Didrichsons. Didrichsons' one-timer beat UM goalie Barnhart for
her 2nd goal of the weekend. In the third, Mary Martin put in her
9th goal of the season, assisted by Tatum MacLeod and Kristen Wilbur.
The Spartans didn't let up as Jessi Kidder notched a goal for MSU.
MacLeod and Katie McPharlin had assists on the play. Late in the
game, MacLeod scored a goal of her own, with assists going to Martin and
C. Shaw. Overall, head coach Craig Payment was pleased with the
Michigan State effort. Lynne Walter earned her 3rd shutout of the
season, and MSU outshot UM 37-7. This game was the last league
game MSU will play until next semester, and they finish the first half
of the season 9-0-1 in the CCWHA, 9-0-1 in the ACHA, and 11-2-1 overall.
1/09 @ University of Rhode
Island: MSU - 3 URI - 4
The Spartans came back early from Christmas break and
traveled out east to take on the University of Rhode Island. The
Rams jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period with a power
play goal and a 2-on-1 shot over Jen Fine's shoulder. Michigan
State pulled together and dominated the second period, outshooting URI
18-4 and scoring 3 goals. Mary Martin scored the first goal at
16:29, assisted by Ashley Wright and Sarah Bienkowski. Later in
the period, Katie McPharlin passed the puck up to Tatum MacLeod who
carried it down the right side and slid it over to linemate McCarthy.
McCarthy banged in a goal to tie the game at 2. With 2 minutes
remaining in the 2nd, Andrea Didrichsons notched her 3rd goal of the
season, assisted by Sarah Steele and Adrienne Shaw. In the third
period, MSU was caught off guard after a quick intermission and the Rams
took advantage to score off of the opening faceoff. Steele had a
breakaway goal mid-period that was disallowed. With 6 minutes left
in the game, the Spartans were put down 5-on-3 and URI scored the game
winning goal on this power play. Michigan State outshot Rhode
Island 36-19. Jen Fine played in net for the 60 minute game.
This loss makes MSU 9-0-1 in the CCWHA, 9-1-1 in the ACHA, and 11-3-1
overall.

Island: MSU - 2 URI - 1
Michigan State beat the University of Rhode Island
Saturday night to split the road series with Rams. At 11:40 of the
first period, Andrea Didrichsons passed the puck up to Sarah Steele who
broke in on URI's goalie. Steele's shot was stopped, but linemate
Andrea DeShong was there to bury the rebound and put MSU up by 1.
A little over a minute later, Catherine Shaw scored her team leading
13th goal of the season to widen the Spartan lead to 2-0. Mindy
McCarthy and Tatum MacLeod recorded assists. MSU outshot URI 20-4
in the second period, and had multiple scoring opportunities but could
not capitalize. In the third period, the Spartans killed off 4
straight minutes of penalties, and then gave up a goal on a scramble in
front of the net. This 2-1 score stood for the rest of the game.
Michigan State outshot Rhode Island 43-20 and Lynne Walter earned the
win in net for MSU. This win makes the Spartans 9-0-1 in the CCWHA,
10-1-1 in the ACHA, and 12-3-1 overall.
1/17 @ Northern Michigan
University: MSU - 3 NMU - 0
The Spartans traveled north to Marquette Michigan for a
weekend series with CCWHA/ACHA foe Northern Michigan University.
Amanda Gallery got MSU on the board at 6:27 of the first with a wrist
shot over Wildcat Tara Trombly's right shoulder. Ashley Wright and
Catherine Shaw had the assists. In the second period, after an MSU
timeout, Mindy McCarthy top-shelved her 6th goal of the season, assisted
by Andrea DeShong and defenseman Katie McPharlin. 30 second later,
Kristen Wilbur fired a slapshot from point past Trombly to give the
Spartans a 3-0 lead. DeShong and Andrea Didrichsons assisted the
play. Northern played a brutally physical game, taking 17
penalties. Michigan State took advantage and scored 3 power play
goals. Lynne Walter played in net for MSU, earning her 4th shutout
of the season. This win makes Michigan State 10-0-1 in the CCWHA,
11-1-1 in the ACHA, and 13-3-1 overall.
1/18 @ Northern Michigan
University: MSU - 6 NMU - 3
Sunday morning, MSU beat Northern 6-3 to finish off the
weekend/series sweep. The Wildcats scored two minutes into the
game to take an early lead. With 36 seconds remaining in the
first, Catherine Shaw carried the puck down the left side and backhanded
a shot at the net. Linemate Tatum MacLeod buried the rebound for
her 8th goal of the season. In the second, Michigan State and NMU
each scored 2 goals to keep the score even. Catherine Shaw and
Andrea DeShong each had goals, while Kristen Wilbur and Mindy McCarthy
recorded assists. The third period was all MSU, as sophomore Mary
Martin scored twice to put her second on the team with 12 goals.
Amanda Gallery and McCarthy assisted the plays. With :45 seconds
left, Sarah Steele sealed the Spartan victory with an empty net goal.
Lynne Walter played the first two periods in net and Jen Fine finished
out the game for MSU. This win makes MSU 11-0-1 in the CCWHA,
12-1-1 in the ACHA, and 14-3-1 overall.

Notre Dame: MSU - 11 ND - 3
The Spartans were on the road for the 3rd straight
weekend as they headed to Notre Dame to face the Fighting Irish.
At 9:25 of the first, freshman Catherine Shaw passed the puck from the
corner to Mindy McCarthy, who slid a pass over to Tatum MacLeod.
MacLeod one-timed the puck past the Notre Dame goalie to put MSU up by
1. Two minutes later, Shaw made it 2-0 with a goal of her own,
assisted by MacLeod and Kristen Wilbur. At 4:53, Wilbur broke out
the puck to McCarthy, who passed it up to MacLeod. MacLeod carried it
the length of the ice to score her 10th goal of the season. A
power play goal by Ashley Wright, assisted by Shaw and Amanda Gallery
made the score 4-0 after 1 period of play. In the second,
Catherine Shaw scored 3 goals (for a team leading 18 goals), while
MacLeod and Jessi Kidder also scored for MSU. Assists went to
Adrienne Shaw (2), Andrea Dillon, Catherine Shaw, McCarthy, MacLeod (2),
Megan Higgins, and Wilbur. Notre Dame's Kaki Orr had two goals of
her own in the second period. In the third, Gallery fed the puck
up to linemate Mary Martin, whose shot on net was rebounded by Wright to
make it 10-2. 15 seconds later, defenseman Adrienne Shaw scored
her second goal of the season, assisted by Andrea Didrichsons.
Lynne Walter played in net for the Spartans, increasing her record to
8-1-0. While the Spartans appeared offensively successful, the
coaching staff was disappointed with the lack of intensity and team
play. This win makes Michigan State 12-0-1 in the CCWHA,
13-1-1 in the ACHA, and 15-3-1 overall.

Notre Dame: MSU - 3 ND -
1
Michigan State finished off their weekend series with a
3-1 win over the University of Notre Dame. The game was scoreless
until Mary Martin got Michigan State on the board at 8:38 of the second
period. Amanda Gallery and Catherine Shaw had the assists.
With 25 seconds remaining in the period, Catherine Shaw scored a
wrap-around goal, assisted by linemates Mindy McCarthy and MacLeod.
Notre Dame scored a goal midway through the third to narrow the Spartan
lead to 1 goal. However, at 7:24 of the third, Martin put in her
14th goal of the season to make it 3-1. Gallery and Ashley Wright
recorded assists on the play. Although the score of Sunday's game
was much closer than the night before, head coach Craig Payment was much
more pleased with the effort of his Spartan squad. The defense
played an intelligent game, and the forwards improved their passing game
and team play. The sweep makes MSU 13-0-1 in the CCWHA, 14-1-1 in
the ACHA, and 16-3-1 overall.
1/30 vs. Western Michigan
University: MSU - 2 WMU - 2
The Spartans returned to home ice for the first time
since late November to face CCWHA/ACHA foe Western Michigan University.
Ashley Wright got the Michigan State on the board with a little over one
minute left in the first period. Mary Martin had the assist.
At the beginning of the second, defenseman Adrienne Shaw passed the puck
up to her sister Catherine, whose shot was rebounded by Tatum MacLeod to
put MSU up by 2. In the third, the Spartans were unable to hold
their lead as the Mustangs scored two goals to make the final 2-2.
Jen Fine played well in net for Michigan State, and MSU outshot WMU
41-23. This tie makes the Spartans 13-0-2 in the CCWHA, 14-1-2 in
the ACHA, and 16-3-2 overall.
1/31 vs. Western Michigan
University: MSU - 1 WMU - 0
Michigan State shut out the Mustangs of Western Michigan
1-0 on Saturday night to clinch their third straight CCWHA regular
season title. The only goal of the game came at 12:36 of the third
period, as defenseman Kristen Wilbur passed the puck to Ashley Wright.
Wright dropped a pass for linemate Amanda Gallery, who put in her 9th
goal of the season. Wilbur earned her 20th point on the play.
The Spartans played a fairly solid game for all 51 minutes, and outshot
the Mustangs 25-14. Lynne Walter played in net, earning her 5th
shutout of the season. This win makes MSU 14-0-2 in the CCWHA,
15-1-2 in the ACHA, and 17-3-2 overall.
2/6 vs. Oakland
University: MSU- 6 OU - 2
MSU took on the Oakland University Polar Bears for their
18th CCWHA contest of the season. Catherine Shaw got things

20th goal of the season, assisted by Tatum MacLeod and Sarah Bienkowski.
MacLeod scored one of her own 3 minutes later to put MSU up by 2.
Assists went to linemates C. Shaw and Mindy McCarthy. Oakland's
Kendra Pittiglio kept the Polar Bears in the game with a goal at the end
of the 1st period. The only goal of the second period came at
10:08, as defenseman Andrea Dillon passed the puck up to Shaw, who put
in her second of the game to make it 3-1. In the third,
Catherine's twin sister Adrienne rushed the puck up from defense and
scored her 3rd goal of the season. Sophomore Andrea Didrichsons
took control of the rest of the period, scoring two goals to give the
team a total of 6. Andrea DeShong, Sarah Steele (2), and Dillon
recorded assists. Oakland's Kristin Czarnecki scored her 9th CCWHA
goal of the season to make the final 6-2. Jen Fine played a solid
game in net for the Spartans. This win makes Michigan State 15-0-2
in the CCWHA, 15-1-2 in the ACHA, and 18-3-2 overall.
2/7 @ Oakland University:
MSU - 2 OU - 1
The Spartans traveled to Rochester on Saturday night to
finish out their weekend series against Oakland University.
Kristin Czarnecki, the Polar Bears' leading scorer, put OU on the board
early in the 1st period. Minutes later, Ashley Wright took
advantage of an MSU power play and scored from her knees to tie the
game. Sarah Steele and Mary Martin assisted the play. Later
in the 1st, grad student Mindy McCarthy scored her 7th goal of the
season on the power play, assisted by Tatum MacLeod and Adrienne Shaw.
This 2-1 score held for the rest of the game, as no scoring occurred in
the 2nd and 3rd periods. Lynne Walter earned the win in net for
MSU, giving her an 8-0-0 record in the CCWHA. This sweep makes the
Spartans 16-0-2 in the CCWHA, 15-1-2 in the ACHA, and 19-3-2 overall.
2/13 vs. University of
Michigan: MSU - 6 UM - 0
Michigan State faced CCWHA/ACHA foe the University of
Michigan in the first of a 2 game series. Catherine Shaw got the
Spartans on the board with her team leading 22nd goal of the season, as
she backhanded in a rebound from Kristen Wilbur's shot from the point.
Near the end of the first, defenseman Andrea Dillon passed the puck up
to Tatum MacLeod who skated in and scored to make it 2-0. In the
second, Katie McPharlin passed the puck to Amanda Gallery, whose high
shot was blocked by Wolverine goalie Jen Barnhart. Mary Martin was
there to bang in the rebound for her 16th goal of the season.
Twenty seconds later, defenseman Adrienne Shaw rushed the puck into the
offensive zone, and passed it back to Karri Hobbs, who scored to put MSU
up by 4. In the third, the Spartans scored two goals in 10 seconds
to make the final 6-0. Andrea DeShong scored from the slot,
assisted by Andrea Didrichsons and Amanda Gallery. On the same
shift, Gallery top-shelved a goal of her own, assisted by DeShong and
Didrichsons. Lynne Walter played in net, earning her 6th shutout
of the year. The Spartans outshot the Wolverines 54-7. This
win makes them 17-0-2 in the CCWHA, 16-1-2 in the ACHA, and 20-3-2
overall.
2/14 vs. University of
Michigan: MSU - 7 UM - 0
The Spartans finished their CCWHA league play at 18-0-2
with a win over the University of Michigan Wolverines. Ashley
Wright got MSU on the board at 10:12 of the first period with a power
play goal, assisted by Catherine Shaw and Amanda Gallery. In the
second, Mary Martin scored a one-timer on a pass from Ashley Wright.
Gallery had the other assist. Two minutes later,
Andrea DeShong banged in her 12th goal of the season, with assists going
to linemates Andrea Didrichsons and Sarah Steele. DeShong took a
pass from Didrichsons later in the 2nd and top-shelved her second goal
of the game to make it 4-0. Adrienne Shaw had the other assist.
In the third, Tatum MacLeod broke in 2-on-1 with Catherine Shaw for an
ESPN highlight-worthy play. MacLeod slid a one-timer pass over to
Shaw, who slid it back across the crease at the last minute to MacLeod.
MacLeod one-timed the puck past Jen Barnhart for her 16th goal of the
year. Mindy McCarthy had the other assist. At 11:15 of
the third, MacLeod scored from an offensive zone face off for the team's
100th CCWHA goal. Wright rounded out the scoring with a goal at
2:13 of the third. Karri Hobbs recorded an assist, as did Amanda
Gallery (giving her her 2nd playmaker of the season). Jen Fine
played in net and earned her 2nd shutout of the year. MSU outshot
UM 55-5 and played a solid game. This win finishes Michigan State
at 18-0-2 in the CCWHA, 17-1-2 in the ACHA, and 21-3-2 overall.
2/20 vs. University of
Wisconsin: MSU - 3 UW - 2
Michigan State took on the University of Wisconsin
Badgers for the first time since their National Championship finals
meeting last March. UW jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first
period with two power play goals. With 4:04 remaining in the
first, Mindy McCarthy passed the puck up to Catherine Shaw who outskated
the Wisconsin defenseman and backhanded a shot over the shoulder of the
Badgers' goalie to make it 2-1. Early in the second, defenseman
Andrea Dillon broke the puck out to McCarthy, who carried it into the
zone, pulled up, and slid a pass over to Catherine Shaw. Shaw
banged in her team leading 24th goal of the season to tie the game at 2.
One minute into the third period, Andrea DeShong put in the game winner,
assisted by Shaw and Dillon. The Spartans played tight defense for
the rest of the game, and held on for the win. Jen Fine was in net
for MSU, earning her 11th win of the year. Michigan State outshot
Wisconsin 29-16. This win makes them 18-0-2 in the CCWHA, 18-1-2
in the ACHA, and 22-3-2 overall.
2/21 vs. University of
Wisconsin: MSU - 3 UW - 2
The Spartans finished out their regular season schedule
with a sweep of the University of Wisconsin. Defenseman Adrienne
Shaw got MSU on the board with a goal from the point, assisted by Katie
McPharlin and Sarah Steele. At 6:31 of the first, Mary Martin's
shot was rebounded by linemate Ashley Wright for her 13th goal of the
season. A minute later, Andrea DeShong stickhandled her way
through the offensive zone and put on past UW's goalie to make it 3-0.
Steele and Andrea Dillon recorded assists. The Badgers battled
back with a goal in the 2nd period and another in the 3rd. They
pulled their goalie in attempt to tie the game, but the Spartans played
good defense and held on for the win. Jen Fine played in net and
MSU outshot Wisconsin 31-19. This ends the team's regular season
at 18-0-2 in the CCWHA, 19-1-2 in the ACHA, and 23-3-2 overall.
CCWHA LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
3/13 vs. Notre Dame:
MSU - 8 ND - 0
Eight different Spartans scored en route to a 8-0 victory
over the Fighting Irish in MSU's opening game of the CCWHA League
Tournament. Defenseman Kristen Wilbur scored the first goal at 12:49 of the
first, assisted by Mindy McCarthy. In the second, Mary Martin
banged in her 18th goal of the year, assisted by linemates Ashley Wright
and Amanda Gallery. Tatum MacLeod scored for the Spartans at 6:13
to put MSU up by 3. McCarthy and C. Shaw recorded assists.
Two minutes later, Wright scored an unassisted goal to widen Michigan
State's lead to 4-0. In the third period, Andrea Didrichsons,
Mindy McCarthy, Karri Hobbs, and Amanda Gallery all lit the lamp to
complete MSU's 8-0 shutout. Sarah Steele, Adrienne Shaw, Tatum
MacLeod, Megan Higgins, Jessi Kidder, Andrea DeShong, McCarthy, and C.
Shaw all had assists. Lynne Walter played in net for MSU,
recording her 7th shutout of the season.
3/14 vs. Oakland
University: MSU - 2 OU - 1
The Spartans dropped a game to Oakland University in
their second game of the tournament. The first period was
scoreless and Oakland scored two quick goals in the second to take the
lead. MSU's Mary Martin responded with a goal of her own to make
it 2-1. Amanda Gallery and Andrea DeShong had assists. The
Spartans pulled their goalie and had multiple scoring opportunities in
the final 2 minutes of the game and greatly outshot the Polar Bears, but were unable to beat OU goalie Jane
Lemaux. This game placed MSU as the 2nd place team in their pool
and sent them to a semifinal game against Western that evening.
3/14 vs. Western
Michigan: MSU - 4 WMU - 2
MSU came out flying as they beat the second seeded Western Michigan
Mustangs in the semifinals of the CCWHA playoffs. Tatum MacLeod
first got the Spartans on the board with a wrist shot from the slot at
2:51 of the first period. Late in the period, Andrea DeShong
banged in her 17th goal of the season, assisted by Sarah Steele and
Katie McPharlin. WMU's Katy Washburn put Western on the board with
a goal in the second period. Mary Martin responded for the
Spartans 2 minutes later with a goal, assisted by linemates Amanda
Gallery and Ashley Wright. Western made a final attempt with a
goal at 6:20 of the 2nd period, but Gallery put the game away for MSU in
the third, assisted by Wright and Martin. Lynne Walter started the
game for Michigan State, and Jen Fine finished in net. This win
put MSU in the final game on Sunday.
3/15 vs. Oakland
University: MSU - 2 OU - 3 (shootout)
In the Championship game, Oakland jumped to a 2-0 lead
after the second with 2 power play goals. MSU senior Sarah Steele
kept the Spartan's hopes alive with two top corner wrist shots in the
third period. Andrea Didrichsons and Kristen Wilbur assisted the
first goal and Wilbur and Andrea Dillon assisted the second. The
score was tied at 2 at the end of regulation, and a 5 minute overtime
session resulted in the same 2-2 score. Finally, a shootout took
place to settle the score, and Oakland managed two goals while MSU was
unable to beat OU's Jane Lemaux. Michigan State outshot Oakland
43-7, but Lemaux played an outstanding game and was named MVP of the
tournament.
